The participants saved money and time, and they reported health improvements. The acceptance of Solvatten was high and so was the willingness to pay – the heated water was especially valued for bathing, washing dishes, cooking and making tea. An additional study demonstrated that Solvatten has the potential to reduce firewood use by at least two tonnes per year for each household.

After 30 SOLVATTEN were distributed to households in Nepal, most of the users liked taste and smell of SOLVATTEN treated water and also believed that SOLVATTEN treated water is safe for drinking. They deemed that it saves time and fuel as they don’t need to boil water. Some of the limitations of SOLVATTEN as per users were diffucult to handle & clean, not easy and takes too much time to fill water.

Practical Travel Gear

I like that the light is small and rugged — it’s water-resistant, which is great, since it was left outside during a rain- and windstorm (with no damage) on my recent trip. I also dig its kelly-green color. It would be nifty if the solar panel was even smaller (it measures about 3 by 7 inches), but I get that the developers aren’t magicians.

Two children are fetching water using the Q Drum

By: Lincoln Rajali Sihotang

Water is an essential part of our life. However, access to clean water is a common problem in developing countries especially in rural areas. Families in rural areas usually have no pipe water connection at home and have to rely on rain water or some have to go fetching water from the river, well, or natural spring. In Matungu District, Western Kenya, women and children have the responsibility to provide water for their household.
