The Corn Sheller is a low-cost device for removing corn kernels from the cob that makes it possible to shell maize (corn) several times faster than manual shelling. Maize shellers can be made in many ways using a variety of materials. These instructions show how to make a maize sheller out of a single piece of sheet metal which is formed and then joined together using a simple jig, though corn shellers can also be made from many other materials.

Developed by: Marco Villagarcia, an engineer from Cusco, Peru, based on an injection molded plastic corn sheller from Malawi, documented by the D-lab. Copyright © Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
