Biomass Stoves for Merapi

Indonesia

The eruption of Mount Merapi in October 2010 had left hundreds of homes destroyed, and many now become homeless. They build temporary shelters using woven-bamboo panels for the wall and corrugated zinc roofs.
They also need stoves for daily cooking activity, and considering the abundant supply of biomass from destroyed trees in the surrounding areas, Biomass UB 03 stove would be ideal for this condition.

This proposal is fully funded

Problem

The eruption of Mount Merapi in October 2010 had left hundreds of homes destroyed, and many now become homeless. They build temporary shelters using woven-bamboo panels for the wall and corrugated zinc roofs. They also need stoves for daily cooking activity, and considering the abundant supply of biomass from destroyed trees in the surrounding areas, Biomass UB 03 stove would be ideal for this condition.

Proposed solution

Kerosene stoves have become too expensive for low income families since the Indonesian Government is no longer subsidizing the kerosene; therefore the price of kerosene is quite high. LPG stoves are even more expensive and mostly used by middle and upper income families.

Biomass UB 03 stove uses biomass as fuel. This biomass can be in the form of dry leaves, tree branches, twigs, corn cob, etc. The stove uses pre-heating mechanism that can save up to 80% of biomass fuel. This stove would be suitable for the victims of Mount Merapi eruption.

Number of people who will benefit

There are potentially 4 Districts in the surrounding Mount Merapi areas affected by the eruption, i.e. Sleman, Magelang, Klaten and Boyolali. In Sleman there are 2,348 households affected by the eruption. We will
select a few villages in Cangkringan, Sleman to distribute 1,000 highly efficient biomass stoves. And we target a total of 4,000 people will benefit from the application of this technology.

About the beneficiaries

Village residents who were the victims of Merapi eruption and used to have income $ 3.00 /day, but now some of them even do not have income anymore, may receive benefit from using this biomass stove. Beneficiaries
will be selected through initial assessment and community meetings to determine who need the stoves most and how they can receive the stove.

Distribution

This project is a response to a natural disaster, and therefore we will distribute the stoves to the victims of Merapi eruption for free. This project should be considered as a humanitarian project aiming to help the victims rebuild their livelihood.
