On 11 March 2011, Japan was struck by the most powerful earthquake and tsunami, leaving massive impact and thousands of people remain homeless without proper access to energy and lighting. This emergency project provides solar powered lanterns to the most severely affected areas.

    • In response to the devastating earthquake and tsunami, 600 solar lanterns were quickly distributed to the vistims in Ishinomaki, Miyagi prefecture, through the distribution partner, Montbell.

      The earthquake and subsequent tsunami left many people without access to electricity and light.

      The lights were distributed for free, as part of emergency humanitarian response.

      600 solar lights were distributed to the people in Miyagi prefecture. Easy to follow instruction on each box of light was useful to explain how to charge the light during the day.

      1,800 people have benefited from the solar lights, especially in conducting day to day activities at night.
      They are used every night. The lights are also every night used by the staff of the organisations that assist the victims.
