On 12 March 2011, Japan was struck by a devastating earthquake and tsunami. The death toll continues to rise and tens of thousands of people remain homeless without access to energy and lighting. This emergency project is providing much needed lights via solar powered lanterns to people in the most severely affected areas, in close collaboration with the local authorities. These lanterns are a simple and efficient solution that will greatly address both the lighting needs and the security of the devastated communities.

    • In response to the devastating earthquake and tsunami, 600 solar lanterns were quickly distributed to the vistims in Miyagi prefecture, through the distribution partner, Winroader.

The earthquake and subsequent tsunami left many people without access to electricity and light.

The lights were distributed for free, as part of emergency humanitarian response.

1000 solar lights were distributed to the people in Rikuzen-Takata-city, Miyako-city, Kamaishi-city, Ohhunato-city. Easy to follow instruction on each box of light was useful to explain how to charge the light during the day.

3,000 people have benefited from the solar lights, especially in conducting day to day activities at night.
They are used every night. The lights are also every night used by the staff of the organisations that assist the victims. They were also used at the meal service at night.
