Let's Bring Smarter Cooking for Women Survivors in Nigeria

Nigeria

Help Nigerian women survivors of human trafficking with fuel efficient cookstoves that enable them to save money on fuel and healthcare costs.

Problem

The rural people in Niger Delta use firewood for cooking on traditional three-stone fireplaces. They typically cook indoors. There are a number of challenges with this. First, firewood is expensive – two hundred naira per bundle outside of the town, three hundred and fifty naira bundle in town. Generally people use 2 bundles per day for their household needs. Second, the wide-spread usage of firewood for cooking and boiling water is the main contributor to rapid deforestation in Nigeria. The burning of wood, indoors, which produces significant smoke also contributes to respiratory illness.

Proposed solution

The Envirofit B-1200 fuel efficient stoves will be introduced to communities with the view to replace the traditional 3-stone method of cooking with firewood. This will result in a decrease in the reliance on firewood because other forms of biomass can be used as fuel – this will save trees and save money. A decrease in the smoke produced by the stove will result in reduced respiratory and health problems.

250 women

About the beneficiaries

The Niger Delta rural poor women in Ondo, and Sango Ota are all marginalized women with low socio-economic status. The majority of them are survivors of human trafficking. Our organization has been working with them extensively to build their entrepreneurial skills. Many of them have since re-entered society and are working steady jobs, for example as cooks in schools. Among the beneficiaries selected, about 50 will be youth.

Distribution

For each unit of stoves, the women will pay between $15-25 USD.

While some will pay in installment over a period of three months, others will be expected to pay for full price, this depends on our evaluation of economic incomes of the beneficiaries which will be discovered from ACAHD registration forms which prospective beneficiaries are expected to fill out.

In each community, upon filling ACAHD’s form of Interest to participate, selected individuals will form a group and coordinating committee will be selected for each group, through which a day will be identified for distribution. Each group and individual will sign an undertaken to pay back the cost of the biomass stove. The committee in each group, will support us in collection of installment payment in collaboration with our staffs designated for this project.
