Light for Remote Fefan Island of Micronesia

Micronesia

Improve access to electricity for the people of Fefan Island, Micronesia by providing d.light solar lights.

Problem

The basis of the problem in our community is a lack of electricity. There is no power plant or infrastructure system to provide electricity to the people of Fefan Island. Occasionally, individual households will rely on gasoline generators or kerosene lamps for lighting, but these options are expensive and unrealistic for most families. As a result, many people live in darkness without the luxury of light. The lack of light creates many problems for the households and is detrimental to their quality of life for a number of reasons. Children cannot study at night and work hours are shortened for everybody.

Proposed solution

Solar technology is the most reliable, affordable and feasible solution to our energy needs. Solar lamps would alleviate the problem of having no electricity on our islands. Solar lighting would save people lots of money and be beneficial for our environment by avoiding the use of gasoline and kerosene. Most importantly, solar technology could provide every household with the economical option of light. People’s lives will be transformed if light is brought into their homes

Number of people who will benefit

600

About the beneficiaries

All community members, many are at the level of poverty, average per capita income is less than USD $500

Everyone will be eligible, but selection will be based on our assessment of personal neediness. Those without any form of electricity will be given the first opportunity, and after that it will be on a first come first serve basis.

Distribution

Our plan is to sell the products at a locally appropriate price.

S1 d.light will be sold for USD $5 per lamp.
S250 d.light will be sold for USD $20 per lamp.

The first phase of distribution will take place at a series of village meetings. If there are still products leftover after the meetings, they will be distributed on a first come first serve basis to members of the community.
