Support the protection of the nearly extinct Cross River gorilla by supplying solar lights to indigenous communities living in the Western Highlands in Cameroon.
In the enclave areas of the Western Highlands of Cameroon, there is no grid power provided by government. As a result, communities resort to using ‘bush’ or kerosene lamps which are detrimental to health and also very costly. Poverty is also a major problem as villagers depend on forests inhabited by the Cross River gorilla (the most critically endangered African primate) for their livelihoods. They also depend on fuel wood for commercialization, household heating, and cooking hence the rapid destruction of the tiny forest remaining. The continued threat being imposed on the gorilla habitat may quicken their local extinction as the indigenous peoples also practice hunting as a means for survival.
The solar light will reduce carbon emissions from kerosene lamps, and help families to carry out their daily activities with greater ease. In particular, children will be able to study during evening hours. The solar light will also encourage the greater cooperation of communities in denouncing hunting of the Cross River gorilla as they will appreciate how our organization can help to solve challenges they are facing on a daily basis.

Communities in the Western Highlands of Cameroon
We intend to sell the lights to the indigenous communities at a reduced cost of 10 USD so that they can afford to purchase the technology while also ensuring they will take good care of the lights. We will also donate some lights to hunters who will give up their guns and denounce hunting of the Cross River gorilla in return.
