Solar lights for remote communities on Atauro Island, Timor Leste.
This project is also fundraising on Kopernik's Japanese website.
Most of the communities on Atauro Island, Timor Leste have no access to electricity and rely on dim, unhealthy and costly kerosene lights to meet their lighting needs. An inital project titled Providing Light for Remote Areas was implemented by Kopernik in partnership with Roman Luan in October 2011 to provide healthy, affordable and efficient lighting for these communities. The project distributed 204 units of d.light S250 solar lights to 3 villages on Atauro Island, Timor Leste. Due to the huge need of lighting on the island, the demand greatly exceeded the supply. Roman Luan estimated that at least an additional 450 units of d.light solar lights were needed to cover the rest of the households on the island. This project, "Providing Light for Remote Areas - Phase 2" continues the work started in phase one.
The solar lights will help improve people's quality of life, enable students to study at night and facilitate better communication through the mobile phone charging capability.
450 households (around 2,250 people)
The beneficiaries are communities in five villages and sub-villages on Atauro Island, who live far away from the main sub-district and have no access to electricity. They are mainly poor farmers and fisherfolk whose income is very low and dependent on the weather.
Roman Luan will work with the Heads of Villages to get the lists of households without access to electricity who have not yet benefited from first phase of the d.light distribution. Both the d.light S250 and S10 will be sold at a subsidized price and the revenue will be reinvested into a new project.
