Beyond Traditional Borders has developed a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) system, called the Baby Bubbler, to provide ventilatory support to infants. This system can make a significant impact on infant survival in the developing world. CPAP works by maintaining positive airway pressure during spontaneous breathing, preventing upper airway collapse, and improving oxygenation. While CPAP technology works effectively in developed countries, limitations such as cost, ease of use and repair, and user knowledge prevent CPAP systems from being implemented in developing countries. The entire Baby Bubbler system costs under $150 and includes a flow generator, patient interface, and CPAP generator. The flow generator provides ambient air flow to the infant, and an optional oxygen port allows users to treat patients with supplemental oxygen.
