“While in Kitgum last week; Sara, one of our entrepreneurs told me this story. A group of students traveling back from Gulu to Kitgum in a Toyota Ipsum had a flat tyre on the road. It was after 7pm and one of them had the d.light S1 reader which he placed on top of the car to give them light as they changed tyres. Once the tyre change was complete they forgot the light on top of the car and drove off!! The light toppled down and was run over. On retrieving it, the stand was completely flattened; the light had dust particles pressed into it. But guess what; it didn´t break and it was still lighting; is still lighting. Needless to say all 4 other occupants of the car ordered for their own immediately. They are spreading the news.

“Reading a book, no problem at all. Working on the kitchen counter (cooking or something) enough light in the area you are working but it is a bit dim just a few feet away. Overall I’m happy with the amount of light this unit puts out. The battery pack is a shrink wrapped Ni-Mh pack and not a standard AA or AAA battery. I think that repairs would be much easier if this light used standard batteries.

“The light works great. Just set it under bright light and press the button to turn it on when needed. Simple and very straight forward. Works great as a backup in case of power outage.

“Brighter than a candle, but not nearly as bright as a 60-watt light bulb. I also purchased the S10 solar LED lantern. The S10 shines in all directions, while the S1 is more like a spot light. If I were to choose between the two types, I would go with the S10 because it appears to be brighter and does shine evenly in all directions. Both the S1 and S10 are bright enough to use for reading, but I would not want to read for too long using them.

“Nice light. Easy to use. Not quite as bright as I'd hoped for, but still lets me get around in a dark room.

“I have the older, blue version of the S10, solar lantern by d.light and an old desk lamp style and this is far superior to both in comparison. The light is much brighter and it both stands and hangs much better. Not sure if this is as durable or waterproof as the S10 but comparing the two, I'd much rather buy this version. I use it in the shower (not immersing it in water) and it still works perfectly fine. One concern I had with my unit is the red charging light doesn't turn on in the same condition as my old lantern (when there's some sun but not bright sun). Initially I thought it wasn't charging or the charging light was broken. However, the unit still charges and the charging light does light up when there's bright light.

“I liked this light looking at photos, but you have to use it yourself to see how cleverly this product is designed. I like pointing it at the corner or ceiling and not seeing the LED light itself, as you would with a regular lamp. It looks good hanging too, pointing up or down. This design should win awards for function and attractiveness. This light is even good for walking around outside with, because it has a diffuser and doesn't have the bright center spot that you'd find in a flashlight, therefore it's less disorienting. Yet, the light is directed in front of you instead of shining in your eyes, like a lamp would. The on/off button requires a firm squeeze and might be hard for an older person with arthritis. The advantage to the firmer button, may be that it prevents you from turning it off and on inadvertently, but for turning it on at night, I'd prefer something a little easier.

“This d.light S1 is just as impressive as its big brother the lantern, and that's quite impressive. The little red LED lights up to let you know it's charging in ANY light - sun, indoor lighting, overcast, streetlamp...I'll test it next full moon and let you know. Incredibly inexpensive, hassle free, multi-position, quality build. Rotating the light on its sturdy steel base, it just FEELS like the kind of quality that will last almost as long as its energy source (our star Sol that is. I bet it will outlast a light bulb by decades). This one has only one brightness setting, compared to two on the lantern, but at half the price and 1/4 the bulk one is all I need.

“I have left them on all night, maybe nine hours. They're pretty dim by then, but the first six hours are fine for reading. One day charge gives hours of light for an evening. I've dropped these several times with no apparent damage.

“We are transitioning to off the grid and I have bought a number of portable LED solar lights. This is my favorite. It is bright, so is great to read by, can be focused different directions on its swivel stand quite easily, and lasts easily through the 2 or 3 hours I use it each night. We are about to get half a dozen to position around the room to give the effect of a more general light. I've come to appreciate its very simple swivel stand design for ease of recharging as well. It can very handily be faced towards the sun at the optimum angle. It stands solidly so that wind is not an issue.
