This is a ‘next generation’ midwifery kit meant for trained professional midwives in low-resource settings. It contains the following items related to preventing postpartum hemorrhage:
1 hemoglobin color scale w/ 200 test strips, 1 solar powered headlamp, 1 visor for the headlamp, 1 rotary mobile phone charger, 1 calibrated obstetric drape to measure blood loss/ create a sterile field, 1 set of flip/reminder cards on the Active Management of the Third Stage of Labor, and 1 video on management of postpartum hemorrhage.
The pack is reusable and carries the contents: the key medical protocol is integrated into the kit so that when it hangs on a hook the protocol is displayed for quick reference.
“The solar headlamps are used on overnight shifts at the hospital, during the time when there is no electricity. The hemoglobanometers are effective for our staff at the hospital and on Mobile Clinics- we would love for every person working at the hospital to have one. The cup for measuring hemorrhage is not being used, except for as a visual aid. It is just not practical to use the cups for collection, as clean-up is difficult in Haiti, so no one wants to have to clean an additional instrument. The cups are useful for visualizing the amount of hemorrhage, so if this is the intended purpose, that's fine. ”
“Some parts of the technology are extremely useful, like the solar-powered headlamp and cell phone crank, which can help midwives to take care of patients at night, even when the electricity is not available at the hospital or in a rural area. Another suggestion for contents in the obstetric kit would be something with water-purifying capability for use in sites like Haiti, in which some rural areas have no access to clean, safe water.”
