Kasese district has poor safe water coverage with most of the households using impure water. According to climate change experts, river Nyamwamba alone is already contaminated by stockpiles from Kilembe mines which are harmful to human health. Since 2008, gut perforation disease has increasingly spread to all parts of the district with at least two people being operated daily since the outbreak. The cases have been recorded at all 3 district hospitals of Kagando, Bwera and Kilembe with people reporting stomach complications.
"The gut perforation complications are caused by drinking contaminated water. We are worried about the rate at which people are contracting this disease. The situation is alarming and needs to be contained," Dr. Kapuru said. Gut perforation is related to perforation of the bowel, perforation (morphologic abnormality), intestinal perforation, perforation of intestine, bowel perforation and perforation of the gut.
Unlike the use of firewood (deteriorating the environment) to boil drinking water, especially among the rural populace and use of electricity (increased costs and power black outs) among the town folks, the Solvatten unit uses solar energy to purify contaminated water. Solvatten takes few hours in the sun to make the water free from pathogens that cause waterborne diseases like dysentery, cholera, and gut perforation. Besides, the use of Solvatten saves on energy, the environment and household income.
315 people (45 households x 7 members per households)
Households at risk and households most affected by gut perforation
Based on the baseline survey findings, households most at risk and those affected with gut perforation will be identified and trained on use of a Solvatten unit. A flexible mode of payment (instalments) for the units will be adapted as agreed upon between RAHA Project team and household heads. The repayment period for a unit purchased will not exceed 6 months. The price at which the units will be sold shall be based on each household’s monthly income. Money from purchases of Solvatten units will be used for ordering more units for households and community members in need of the units.
