Giving kids the gift of hearing  October 22, 2010

While we do not show preference over any one particular company, we do have a partnership with Solar Ear that has helped us distribute more hearing aids than we would otherwise. Solar Ear is a Brazilian non-profit organization that manufactures, assembles and distributes quality hearing aids specifically for the developing world. Solar Ear’s low-cost hearing products are much cheaper than conventional hearing aids without compromising quality. They include digital rechargeable hearing aids, solar battery chargers, and rechargeable hearing aid batteries. The batteries cost the same as disposable zinc air batteries, but last 2 to 3 years, saving families additional money. Solar Ear does not have a network of distributors in Vietnam. However, it will accept repair orders at their facility in Brazil. The Global Foundation is working with Solar Ear to identify ways to more easily serve families who may not be able to afford the shipping costs to Brazil, including the establishment of a hearing aid service center and building a repository of hearing aids.
