In Burkina Faso, 95% of people have no access to electricity, and many are unlikely to gain access to electricity in their lifetime. Families rely on kerosene for lighting. Kerosene is expensive, and the price frequently fluctuates, making it difficult for families to afford lighting. When they can afford fuel, kerosene lanterns irritate eyes and cause respiratory problems, especially for children. Without adequate lighting, children are unable to study in the evening, perpetuating the cycle of extreme poverty.
We can connect d.light S20 solar lights with children in Burkina Faso. The solar lights will save families money, reduce the risk of fire, and improve indoor air quality and health.
Since our fundraising campaign for this project ended, the d.light S10 solar lantern has been replaced by the more efficient, cheaper and upgraded version, the d.light S20. The reduced cost of this new model has meant we were able to send 696 d.light S20 solar lanterns to Burkina Faso instead of the initial 504 units of the d.light S10.
The solar lights will reach school children in central and south central Burkina Faso.
We will distribute the solar lanterns through a micro-credit system. Our local partner, SOS Energie Burkina, has set up a project management committee to implement an agreement with schools to secure the credit. In collaboration with the teachers and parents association, the lanterns will be distributed to the students with repayment in instalments. Regular reports will be provided by the management committee to the local school partners.
Financial contribution: Cost of domestic transportation of the products from customs to the community. Non-financial contribution: Distribution and product training.
