Challenge:

Ongoing seismic activity at Mount Agung has led to authorities issuing the volcano’s alert level to 'Siaga' or level 3, with people being told to stay away from areas less than 7.5 km from the crater.

More than 40,000 people within the 7.5-km exclusion zone from Mount Agung are still living in evacuation centres, according to latest government data. These evacuation centers provide basic facilities for the evacuees and ensure they are a safe distance from the volcano.

Since September 22, a community effort coordinated by Kopernik, IDEP, Bumi Sehat, Rio Helmi and Rucina Ballinger and the Green School Parents has been working together to provide much-needed supplies including food, warm blankets, sleeping mats, hygiene kits and water filters to the evacuation centers. The community effort has also been providing water and sanitation facilities as well supporting the movement of livestock into safe evacuation zones.

Supporting the evacuation centers and the host communities who are receiving the evacuees is going to require long-term assistance. Clean drinking water is a priority need. It is anticipated that an eruption would create ash clouds that would impact drinking water. The availability of water filters in each location would ensure that people living there have continued access to clean safe drinking water.

How we can help:

We are providing 800 Nazava water filters in the evacuation centers and to host communities to provide continued access to clean and safe drinking water. We expect that these will serve at least 16,000 people.

Who are we working with:

The Mt. Agung Relief team will help families affected by Mount Agung’s activity in the evacuation points and host communities that are assessed as having the biggest needs in coordination with local government emergency response teams that have already established posts to aid the evacuees.

Distribution:

All water filters will be distributed at the evacuation centers and host communities for free.
