Lights for Midwives

East Timor

Provide lights for a network of midwives who currently deliver babies by candle and kerosene light.

This proposal is fully funded

Problem

Our clinic provides an obstetric service for Dili and surrounding districts. Some of these areas are very remote and lack suitable and reliable lighting for obstetric practice. Currently candles and kerosene lamps are used but are not ideal due to: fumes, cost of kerosene and candles, danger of flame in enclosed areas. The solar powered lights would be greatly helpful in this setting.

Proposed solution

Solar powered lights would be used instead of candles and kerosene lamps.

Number of people who will benefit

25 mobile midwives x 1 delivery per night ~ 25 mothers and babies/day ~ 150/week ~ 7500/year The number of midwives continues to grow as more are trained.

About the beneficiaries

Beneficiaries will be all midwives who are performing mobile clinic duties. Income < USD $80/month

Distribution

In this instance, we would only give the products to midwives who have specific training and have reached a level of competence to practice independently.

Campaign amount

$2,762

Contribution of organization

We are a small clinic with a high patient load. Financially we hope to be supported by NGOs but our non-financial contribution is significant. Training local women to be midwives, transferring difficult cases to our facility for more complex treatment and the time and efforts of our volunteer doctors.
