Relieve the burden of carrying water for the women of East Timor

Timor-Leste

Help get the Q-Drum – the rollable water container - into the hands of the women of Oecusse, East Timor.

Problem

In East Timor, half of the population does not have access to potable water. Many families live very far from a water source. Women and girls are tasked with collecting and carrying water for daily household use over very long distances sometimes more than six times per day. They currently carry the water in 5 litre plastic jerry-cans. This is a huge physical and time burden on the women.

Proposed solution

The Q-Drums will be used as a pilot to introduce the women to this new product. They will be able to borrow and test the Q-Drums and see whether they prefer them to the current containers that they use. This pilot is intended to introduce a new product into the market and for the community to see for themselves how much less time and effort is required to transport water for household use. Centro Feto will also determine during this time what the market value of the Q-Drum will be (how much the community is willing to pay for it – likely this would be similar to the cost of the 5 litre jerry cans they currently use).

Number of people who will benefit

It is expected that up to 100 households will benefit from the introduction of the Q-Drum.
