“The technology has no harm on the environment, and the units can be used as containers to store water. The units are good overall but the only bottleneck is their cost: they are expensive for rural women. With average solar radiation, the equipment takes 2 to 3 hours to clean the water; however, with low solar radiation (cloudy day) or when the wind is strong, beneficiaries report that it takes longer to clean the water. Also, the units are effective, only that some units have the problem of leaking and that sometimes makes the rural woman unhappy. Otherwise there is a great impact in the areas where we supplied the units.”

“After 30 SOLVATTEN were distributed to households in Nepal, most of the users liked taste and smell of SOLVATTEN treated water and also believed that SOLVATTEN treated water is safe for drinking. They deemed that it saves time and fuel as they don’t need to boil water. Some of the limitations of SOLVATTEN as per users were diffucult to handle & clean, not easy and takes too much time to fill water.

“The participants saved money and time, and they reported health improvements. The acceptance of Solvatten was high and so was the willingness to pay – the heated water was especially valued for bathing, washing dishes, cooking and making tea. An additional study demonstrated that Solvatten has the potential to reduce firewood use by at least two tonnes per year for each household.
