Challenge:

Students in the poorest areas of Indonesia rarely have access to safe, clean drinking water at school. They often go thirsty, even after a long, hot walk to school in the morning. Dehydration leads to trouble concentrating in class. Some students drink unpurified water, at the risk of stomach aches and waterborne diseases. Bottled water is too expensive for poorer families. We've met teachers who arrive at school early each day to purify water for their students by boiling it, paying for fuel costs out of their own pockets.

How we can help:

We can make safe, clean drinking water available to students at schools in Bojonegoro and Tuban with Nazava water filters. The Nazava Bening XL filters six litres of water per hour and holds 27.5 litres of water in each container: enough to keep 110 students hydrated during the school day. With safe drinking water freely available, students will be able to concentrate better in class and suffer fewer health problems.

Who are we working with:

We are helping students and teachers at 51 schools in Bojonegoro and Tuban, East Java, Indonesia.

Distribution:

The Kopernik team in Bojonegoro and Tuban will work closely with the Indonesia Heritage Foundation to identify schools interested in the water filter technology, and to distribute the water filters. They will complement the distribution with an education program called the Green Class, where students will learn about the importance of clean water, sanitation, energy and appropriate technology.
