Challenge: 

Families living in Kailali District, Nepal, have limited access to reliable electricity and face rolling blackouts that can last up to 18 hours. They rely heavily on kerosene, candles, and battery-powered torchlights that are often in short supply and remain a burden on the household budgets.

Our local partner, Empower Generation, has determined a way to provide an affordable and clean lighting solution to the families in the Kailali District. They are empowering one female entrepreneur to lead a team of women who will promote and sell clean solar technologies in their communities.

In this second phase of the project, Empower Generation has identified an impressive woman, Chhaya Devkota, to be the lead solar entrepreneur. She has been working as an entrepreneur in the area since April 2016.

How we can help: 

By supporting Chhaya to train other women to distribute simple solar technologies we will help provide the people of Kailali district with access to clean, safe and renewable sources of light. Various technologies such as portable solar lights and solar home systems will allow families to eliminate the high cost of fuel for lighting. A solar light will make it easier for students to continue their study after dark. Additionally, some solar lights have a mobile phone charging feature that will allow families to keep in contact with each other, without having to pay fees at charging stations that are often long distances away from their homes.

Who are we working with: 

We will help families that currently generate an income of approximately US$150-200 per month through regular day-wage jobs and agricultural work. These families come from a mix of indigenous Tharu and hillside backgrounds and are considered lower-middle class.

Distribution: 

Chhaya’s enterprise will initially cover the surrounding on-grid areas within a 10km distance from her home village. She will establish and train new sales agents in the following Village Development Committee (VDC) off-grid areas: Thapapur, Khailad, Joshipur, Munuwa VDC. Chhaya also aims to expand her business to the two neighbouring districts, Bardiya and Kanchanpur.

Empower Generation will:

  • Cover the one-time sign-up and installation fee for new customers using Pay-As-You-Go payment method for the solar home system.
  • Pay costs associated with the back-end system and CRM.
  • Cover the commission fees every time a sales agent makes a sale or receives a payment. 
  • Cover the costs for producing branding and promotional materials.
  • Cover the domestic transportation costs to deliver the technology to the communities.

Non-financial contribution

Empower Generation will dedicate a full-time program coordinator and some field team resources to manage this project,  including administration,  monitoring, and evaluation. Empower Generation will also provide warehouse space to store the technology.
