Challenge:

The poverty level is high and the level of women's empowerment is low in Bojonegoro, East Java. There is a direct link. Women hold the key to sustainable development because they spend more of their extra income than men on items that benefit families, such as education, nutrition, healthcare and sanitation. Research has shown that women's work is associated with reduced poverty and faster growth.

How we can help:

We're creating economic opportunities for women in Bojonegoro by offering them training and resources to become independent technology agents.

In the second phase of this project, we worked with a group of highly motivated women to develop the skills to become successful technology agents. By participating in basic sales, marketing, accounting and computer training, they gained practical skills and confidence to sell water filters on consignment. The 18 graduates of our technology agent program went on to form a women's cooperative, Koperasi Banyu Urip, which has grown to more than 40 members. In addition to boosting their income from technology sales, they have set up a savings and loans program, opening up new economic opportunities.

In the third phase of the project, we will work with Koperasi Banyu Urip members to introduce and sell new technologies in Bojonegoro, and we will also expand the technology agent program to the neighbouring regency of Tuban.

Who are we working with:

We're helping women living in poverty in Bojonegoro and Tuban, two regencies located west of the city of Surabaya, on the Indonesian island of Java. A region traditionally dependent on farming and forestry, many people still live in poverty, especially in the southern part of Bojonegoro where the soil is less fertile. As our technology agents start up technology sales in their communities, many people will benefit from access to simple, life-changing innovations.

Distribution:

We will work with Koperasi Banyu Urip, Semai Benih Bangsa and Indonesia Heritage Foundation to offer technology agent training to women and to introduce new technologies.  After conducting a technology fair to work out which technologies are most in demand, we will make the technologies available to the women to sell on consignment.
