What the heck is a Wartek? »

(a) a character in The Hobbit, (b) an online gaming community, (c) a robotic warthog, (d) Kopernik’s flagship technology store! Indonesiaphiles will know that a warung is a small family-run business, usually selling food. The Kopernik ‘family’ likes to cook (especially on clean, fuel-efficient cookstoves!), but we’re not quite ready to launch a food stall, so we’ve launched a technology stall instead – Warung Teknologi, or Wartek for short.

Working with a d.light

d.light Reaches 10 Million People! »

We are excited to spread the word that d.light has reached a very important milestone: 10 million people to date have received d.light solar lights! d.light’s founding purpose is to create new freedoms for customers without reliable power so they can enjoy a brighter future. And with 1.5 billion people living without access to electricity that is no small order. Driven by the knowledge that a reliance on dangerous gasoline and kerosene steals potential by limiting time kids can study, hours people can work and fresh air for people to breath, d.light remained unintimidated.

Meet the team: Annie O'Brien »

In a nutshell: In September 2011 I completed my master’s degree in medical anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. I moved to London after working in Delhi for 2 ½ years with the Clinton Foundation Health Access Initiative. I developed an early interest in HIV/AIDS and international development thanks to my mom, who was actively involved with various HIV/AIDS groups in the mid-1990s in Philadelphia (where I grew up).
