Release Burkina Fasan school children and their families from the burden of kerosene for lighting.
95% of Burkina Faso’s population does not have access to electricity and will not have in their lifetime, making them mainly dependent on kerosene for their lighting needs. This kerosene is not only costly and undergoes frequent price fluctuations; it causes serious respiratory problems, especially for women and children.
d.light S10s will cut carbon emissions, provide independence from fluctuating kerosene prices, reduce the risk of fire, and improve indoor air quality and therefore human health.
500 school children and their families.
Poor school children residing in central and south central Burkina Faso. Lack of electricity in these areas means that the children are unable to study in the evening at home, further perpetuating the cycle of extreme poverty.
The solar lanterns will be distributed through a system of micro-credit. SOS Energie Burkina has set up a project management committee to implement an agreement between themselves and schools to secure the credit. Then in collaboration with the teachers and parents’ association, the lanterns will be distributed to the students with repayment in installments. Regular reports will be provided by the management committee to the local school partners.
