A New Initiative to Track Impact with Technology

SMS surveys are one way to track impact through tecnology

Kopernik is proud to launch a new initiative tracking impact through technology, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation and Asia Community Ventures. We are conducting a comprehensive survey of impact tracker technology - low-cost, technology-based social impact measurement tools. We will use this survey to produce a catalogue to help guide people working in the impact investing, social enterprise, and nonprofit sectors in Asia and beyond.

While there are ways of measuring social and environmental impacts of companies and funds, such as Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS) and Global Impact Investing Ratings System (GIIRS), these metrics have not been broadly adopted. The key barriers include low availability of appropriate tools to capture data and the relatively high cost of measurement. We will create a user-friendly resource for practitioners looking for cost-effective methods to track and analyse social impact data, helping to improve transparency and understanding of the impact investing industry’s results.

Kopernik is one of four recipients of the Impact Economy Innovations Fund (IEIF) in East and Southeast Asia. The Impact Economy Innovations Fund aims to catalyse collective action and regional market development that will accelerate market driven solutions for advancing some of the most important development challenges. More than 40 proposals were submitted from eight countries. The other winners in East and Southeast Asia were AKSI UI Foundation, Change Fusion and the Spark Center for Social Entrepreneurship Development.

“THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION IS THRILLED TO SUPPORT THE FOUR WINNERS, WHO EACH REPRESENT A UNIQUE AND CRITICAL COMPONENT IN BUILDING THE IMPACT INVESTING INDUSTRY AND SOCIAL ENTERPRISE SECTOR WITHIN THIS REGION,” SAID FERN UENNATORNWARANGGOON, SENIOR PROGRAM ASSOCIATE FOR THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION, ASIA.

We have already started the survey of impact tracker technology, and will publish the catalogue online and in print in 2014. The publication will be accompanied by launch events, webinars, conference presentations and other activities to maximise the accessibility and utility of the catalogue.
