Tech Kiosk is The New Wartek

Did you know that Google was originally called BackRub? That Nissan was originally called Datsun? Or that Indonesia was originally called the Dutch East Indies?

Following in the footsteps of some great moments in renaming, we are very happy to announce that our Wartek technology store is now called (drumroll, please): Tech Kiosk!

If you read the blog post from last year, “What the heck is a Wartek?”, you will remember that Wartek sold a range of Kopernik’s simple, innovative technologies from our office in Ubud, on the Indonesian island of Bali. The proceeds from these technology sales funded our projects serving the last mile – the hardest-to-reach parts of the developing world.

But the name Wartek (warung teknologi) is very specific to Indonesia. We decided to change the name to Tech Kiosk, a name that would be catchy both within Indonesia and beyond.

OUR TECH KIOSKS SERVE A RANGE OF CUSTOMERS: PEOPLE LIVING IN REMOTE AREAS, PEOPLE WHO FACE FREQUENT POWER CUTS, AND PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LIVE A MORE ECO-FRIENDLY LIFESTYLE BY USING OUR WATER FILTER AND SOLAR TECHNOLOGIES.

To reach more customers, we have expanded beyond Ubud, setting up a network of Tech Kiosks in Bali. We are working together with existing small business owners, who resell the technologies from their small shopsreceiving a commission on every sale. We want to reach more people with simple, life-changing technology while also supporting economic development.

We have also received enquiries from people who are very keen to sell our technologies but who don’t have a shop to display the technologies. We have welcomed these micro-entrepreneurs as Tech Agents, building on the success of our existing Tech Agent programs in East Java and East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.

I am very happy to introduce the first members of our Tech Kiosk network:
