Drink Up Sabu Island, Indonesia

Let’s make safe drinking water available on Sabu Island, by connecting water filters with families in this remote part of East Nusa Tenggara province.

  • Test Potential Solutions

THE PROBLEM

In 2014 alone, there were 3,847 cases of diarrhea on Sabu Island, primarily caused by contaminated water. The water must be boiled to make it safe to drink, but firewood is in limited sUpply. Often families prioritise using wood for cooking rather than purifying water. Moreover, Sabu Island residents prefer the taste of unboiled water to the smoky flavour of water boiled over a wood-fueled fire. However, drinking unboiled water is making them very sick, and young children are especially at risk.

THE SOLUTION

By connecting Nazava Bening 1 water filters with families on Sabu Island, people will be able to drink clean, healthy drinking water every day without using precious fuel. The ceramic water filter candle removes particles, deactivates bacteria and other microorganisms, and will reduce the level of harmful chemicals in the water, such as pesticides and chlorine, improving taste.

THE EXPECTED IMPACT

HAKLI will distribute the water filters in three sub-districts through their field staff. Families will be able to pay for the water filters in full upfront, or in three instalments over six months. Sales revenue will be reinvested in more technology to serve more people in the last mile.

THE PROJECT RESULT

We used to drink unboiled water, because it’s not easy to find firewood for cooking. Now, after using the water filter, we can drink clean, healthy water without boiling it first. We’re not afraid of diarrhoea anymore!” - Yulius Haba, water filter user, Pedero village, Sabu island

By using this water filter, I feel relieved because now I can provide my family with clean and safe drinking water. I am confident with the quality of water purified by the water filter as I’ve seen the lab result provided by the sanitation officer in the village. Since using this water filter, I also have stopped purchasing kerosene for boiling water. I hope that I can buy other technology that can help me save fuel or electricity.” - Bendelina Kolo Ratu, housewife, Tana Djawa village, Sabu island

I am very glad to have this Nazava water filter, it is easy to use and maintain, affordable, and the quality of water is also guaranteed.” - Tade Mone, water filter user, Teriwu village, Sabu island

High transportation costs, long distances to the project location and terrible road conditions were the challenges reported by the local partner in getting the technology to the target communities.
