Supporting Livelihoods Of Small-Scale Fishers And Farmers In Papua – Fisheries

This project is implemented by Yayasan Kopernik on behalf of our partner who provided grant funding for this project.

We support small-scale fishers by introducing user-friendly technologies, extending the shelf life of their catch, diversifying products, and expanding market access to boost productivity, sales, and income.

Project Type

  • Test Potential Solutions

THE PROBLEM

Small-scale fishers rely on conventional cooling methods that require large amounts of ice, which are costly and generate significant plastic waste in villages and along the coastline. Additionally, they often lack knowledge of sustainable fishing practices and value-added product (VAP) development, resulting in limited market access.

THE SOLUTION

Kopernik is establishing a hub to support communities by introducing accessible, user-friendly cooling solutions such as gel packs and cool boxes. We are strengthening sustainable fisheries practices and diversified value-added products (VAPs) through capacity-building activities, improved production processes, and expanded market opportunities.

THE EXPECTED IMPACT

This intervention aims to improve the quality of fish caught, boost sales performance by expanding market reach, and create additional revenue streams for small-scale fishers by equipping them with essential skills and knowledge in sustainable fisheries practices and processing.
