What the Heck is a Wartek?

(a) a character in The Hobbit
(b) an online gaming community
(c) a robotic warthog
(d) Kopernik’s flagship technology store!

Indonesiaphiles will know that a warung is a small family-run business, usually selling food. The Kopernik ‘family’ likes to cook (especially on clean, fuel-efficient cookstoves!), but we’re not quite ready to launch a food stall, so we’ve launched a technology stall instead – a Warung Teknologi, or Wartek for short.

Based at our office in Ubud, Bali, our Wartek sells a selection of Kopernik technologies including water filters, fuel-efficient stoves and solar lights – simple technologies designed to make life easier for people living without reliable access to electricity or clean water.

Our Wartek customers include people who are living in remote off-the-grid areas, people who have to deal with frequent power cuts, as well as people living in more developed areas who enjoy the convenience and savings from using water filters or solar lamps.

The Nazava Water Filters have been our most popular product since the Wartek opened in May 2012. Available in a range of sizes and fashion-forward colors from as little as 175,000 Rp (US$18), they save users money and the hassle of buying large bottles of purified water. Best of all, the income from Wartek sales goes towards funding Kopernik projects serving people living in the last mile – where these technologies are needed the most.

We welcome Wartek visitors - please drop by and say hi if you are in Bali. The Kopernik office and Wartek are located in the village of Sayan, a few kilometres northwest of the center of Ubud, just north of Gaya Gallery. The Wartek is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, excluding Indonesian holidays.
