Pre-Feasibility Study on Waste-to-Energy from Coffee Husk for Added Value and Energy Efficiency in Coffee Production

This project is implemented by Yayasan Kopernik on behalf of our partner who provided grant funding for this project.

We are testing the feasibility of coffee husk waste as an alternative energy source to create added value and improve energy efficiency in coffee production.

  • Test Potential Solutions

THE PROBLEM

Farmers earn limited income due to minimal post-harvest processing of their coffee produce. This income is further reduced by the need to repay debts to collectors from operational and livelihood installments during the non-harvest season, leaving little room for investment in improved practices that could enhance the value of their coffee products. Meanwhile, coffee production generates large amounts of waste, particularly coffee husks. Due to the absence of proper waste management systems, this waste remains unutilized.

THE SOLUTION

Kopernik conducted a pre-feasibility study on waste-to-energy solutions using coffee husks to increase added value and improve energy efficiency in coffee production.

THE EXPECTED IMPACT

By conducting this study and implementing appropriate technology to utilize coffee waste, the expected outcomes include reducing waste from coffee production, increasing the value of coffee products through more sustainable production processes, and enhancing post-harvest processing through the use of renewable energy and improved energy efficiency.
