Challenge:

In Oriental Mindoro, the growing population has inadequate access to electricity. Rural families spend much of their household income on kerosene, candles and other inefficient sources of light. These fuels are dim, dirty, dangerous and expensive. Poor quality light after sunset makes working difficult and studying nearly impossible.

How we can help:

The d.light solar lights will provide clean, affordable and efficient lighting and phone charging capabilities to some of the most disadvantaged communities in Oriental Mindoro.

Who are we working with:

The solar lights will reach five communities where our local partner, Gelacio I. Yason Foundation Family Farm School (GIYF-FFS), works. With 75 percent of families dependent on agriculture, poverty is high, access to quality education is low, and many people suffer from malnutrition. The average family size is seven people.

Distribution:

We will sell the solar lights at a locally affordable price, thanks to free delivery and training services from the distributor. We will use the proceeds from solar light sales to purchase more lanterns to reach more communities through microfranchising, helping local people develop new income streams.

Project timeframe:
March - June 2012
Location :
Reaching 2040 people
Local Partner Contribution:
  • Local distribution costs
  • Staff to implement, monitor and provide technical support
