Challenge:

The poverty level is high and the level of women's empowerment is low in Bojonegoro, East Java. There is a direct link. Women hold the key to sustainable development because they spend more of their extra income than men on items that benefit families, such as education, nutrition, healthcare and sanitation. Research has shown that women's work is associated with reduced poverty and faster growth.

How we can help:

We're creating economic opportunities for women in Bojonegoro by offering the training and resources for them to become independent technology agents. We'll introduce simple, life-changing technologies that they can sell in their communities. The women will learn all about how to use and maintain the technology, so they can share their knowledge with customers and offer after-sales support. The women will develop the skills they need to become independent technology agents by participating in basic sales, marketing and accounting training. They can then request water filters and biomass stoves on consignment, and earn a commission from every sale, boosting their income to support their families.

Who are we working with:

We're helping women living in poverty in Bojonegoro, a inland regency located west of the city of Surabaya, on the Indonesian island of Java. A region traditionally dependent on farming and forestry, many people still live in poverty, especially in the southern part of the regency where the soil is less fertile. As our technology agents start up technology sales in their communities, many people will benefit from access to simple, life-changing innovations.

Distribution:

Working with our local partner, Farabi, we will introduce the technologies to selected villages and invite women to participate in our technology agent training. The women will then take charge of selling the technology in their communities.
