We supported families affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Palu and Donggala, Central Sulawesi by connecting them with Nazava water filters, solar lights, shelter kits, hygiene kits, kitchen kits, school kits, reconstruction kits and water installations in two villages, Jono Oge, Sigi regency and Tompe village, Donggala regency.
THE PROBLEM
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred on 28 September 2018, 17:02 in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The earthquake epicenters were located at 0.18 South and 119.85 East, 26 km North to the Donggala Regency, at a depth of 10 km (BMKG).
Shortly after the earthquake, a tsunami reaching up to 6-meters high struck areas of Palu, Sigi, and Donggala. Certain points across the areas were also hit by liquefaction, a phenomenon when water-saturated soil, shaken by an earthquake, acts like a liquid, causing the ground to temporarily lose its ability to bear structures.
According to BNPB, the disaster claimed more than 2,200, over 4,400 people injured, 680 people missing, and more than 220,000 people displaced who were forced to abandon their houses due to loss of or damage to their housing. 2,736 schools were also damaged. Among the IDPs were vulnerable groups of women and children under five. They were living in temporary settlements lacking basic services and were exposed to additional disasters including disease and lack of security.
THE SOLUTION
Based on Kopernik’s initial assessment, we decided to focus our support on six villages; (i) Jono Oge, Lolu, Boladangko, Bolapapu, and Tangkulowi villages in Sigi district, and (ii) Tompe village in Donggala district. The six villages sustained the most severe damage by the earthquake and lique
faction, but received limited aid. Most of the affected people in these six villages stayed in temporary shelters either in group camps or individual camps near their destroyed houses. Currently, there are still a number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) centers of which five are located in Sigi and four in Tompe.
We will be distributing the kits, water filters, solar light, reconstruction kits and shelter kits to six villages in Sigi and Donggala, which have a population of 3,021 in Jono Oge, and 2,310 people in Tompe, respectively. There are additional beneficiaries from three villages in Sigi with total number of people who received our support were 1,083 beneficiaries.
FUNDING INFORMATION
The administration fee has been listed as 0 in the budget as these costs have been waived as Kopernik’s contribution to our community.
Please note that due to the urgency of the situation some of the goods have already been delivered and we are crowdfunding for those costs retrospectively.
