Challenge:

Children in remote mountain hamlets of East Bali live without access to safe drinking water. Diseases in the unsafe water they consume cause stomach aches and illness that keep them from attending school. Boiling water only kills some of the threats living in the water, and uses up precious fuel, firewood and time, while bottled water is prohibitively expensive. Because of the lack of easily available safe drinking water, many children drink no more than one or two glasses of water a day. It is difficult for them to study and focus in school when they are so thirsty.

How we can help:

We can make safe drinking water available to students in East Bali by connecting simple water filter technology with remote schools. Access to safe drinking water at school will improve children's health and concentration in class. In the first phase of this project, we introduced water filters to six schools in Desa Ban. Based on the positive feedback we received from students, teachers and community leaders, we are expanding this project to reach more 45 more schools and two public health clinics in East Bali. We are also helping to establish a Tech Kiosk in Ban village selling affordable water filters to the wider community.

Who are we working with:

We will reach students at kindergartens, primary schools, junior high schools and extensions schools in the villages of Ban, Kubu, East Tianyar, Central Tianyar and North Tianyar. In this impoverished rural area 75 percent of families live in one-room bamboo huts and 50 percent live without toilets or bathrooms.

Distribution:

We will work with our local partner, East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP), to distribute the water filter technology.
