Due to cultural beliefs, mums-to-be in rural Laos often give birth alone in the forest. This has resulted in high maternal and infant mortality rates in rural areas.
By connecting JANMA Clean Birth Kits with mums-to-be through nurses and midwives, we can ensure a sterile, safer birthing practice. The JANMA Clean Birth Kits contain a basic sterile birthing kit that helps to prevent infections, mortality and morbidity during childbirth.
We will help mums-to-be living in remote areas of Salavan province, Laos, who have limited access to health care assistance. We have already been working with our local partner, CleanBirth.org, to provide 3000 clean birth kits to make childbirth safer for mums in Laos. The latest phase of the project will provide a further 3000 clean birth kits.
The clean birth kits will be distributed in March and September to local nurses from 43 remote clinics and 1 hospital in Salavan province, Laos. The nurses then will distribute the kits free to mums-to-be coming to the clinic for prenatal visits. Mums-to-be who live in more remote villages will receive the kits when the nurses conduct their regular prenatal visits. The nurses will also teach the mums-to-be on how to use the kits.
Training for local nurses, salaries for local staff, outreach activities, and monitoring and evaluation assessment.
