Challenge:

A surge of seismic activity at Mount Agung has prompted authorities to raise the volcano’s alert status to awas or level 4 (highest) from siaga or level 3 (high) on late Friday (22 September), indicating greater probability of an eruption. Although authorities still cannot say when the mountain will erupt, an emergency response period has been declared. The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) urged residents and tourists to stay away from areas less than 12 km of the crater.

According to the latest data from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Bali, as of the morning of 29 September, there were more than 130,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes as the volcano’s magma flows have risen closer to the surface, triggering hundreds of tremors. The residents are currently being evacuated and dispersed across 508 evacuation points in Klungkung, Karangasem, Buleleng, Bangli, Gianyar, Tabanan, Badung, and Denpasar regencies.

Since the 22 of September a community effort coordinated by Kopernik, IDEP, Bumi Sehat, Rio Helmi and Rucina Ballinger and the Green School Parents has been working to identify the evacuation points that need the most assistance, to assess the needs of the evacuees, and to raise money to deliver basic hygiene kits, food items, blankets, sleeping mats and water filters that provide safe drinking water to these evacuation points.  We are also assisting families to move their precious livestock from the evacuation zone to safe areas.

The needs are evolving and the community effort will continue to provide needed supplies as identified on a regular basis.

How we can help:

We are connecting hygiene kits comprised of buckets, water dippers, soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, mosquito repellent, sanitary pads, baby products and diapers as well as food, clothes, sleeping mats, blankets and Nazava water filters and cups to families affected by the volcano’s increasing activity. We are also assisting in the construction of sanitation facilities.  We are also assisting families to move their precious livestock from the evacuation zone to safe areas.

Who are we working with:

The joint relief effort will help families affected by Mount Agung’s activity in the evacuation points that are assessed as having the biggest needs in coordination with local government emergency response teams that have already established posts to aid the evacuees.

Distribution:

All supplies and equipment will be distributed for free.
