In November 2016, Kopernik agreed with our local partner for this project, HADEER, that we would allocate any remaining water filters they couldn’t sell to a new project. We would also waive the outstanding payment of US$1,579.62 due to us.

We have been trying to work with HADEER to facilitate the shipping of the remaining water filters to a new location but have not been able to lock in their assistance in this process. While HADEER has fulfilled their partnership obligations in the form of submitting a final report and paying us the adjusted repayment amount of US$3,400, in the past two months they have been unresponsive and we have not been able to successfully recover the unsold technologies.

After trying to resolve this issue for the past eight months, we have decided to officially close down this project and notify our donors of this result. We will not be working with HADEER again.

While the project was not implemented fully to our satisfaction, there were still a lot of positive achievements met by our local partner during the Drink Up Bobonaro, Timor Leste project which you can read about in detail in the project report and our full impact assessment report.

Challenge:

A water quality study conducted by the Timor-Leste Ministry of Health in 2010 found that 70 percent of the water sources tested were microbiologically contaminated. This is a huge concern, as many waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid are caused by drinking contaminated water. In rural Bobonaro, a district bordering Indonesian West Timor, most families collect water from sources near their homes, but drinking this water is making people sick. Some families have decided to draw from a safe water source in the mountains, but this requires a 90 minute walk from their homes.

How we can help:

By introducing Nazava water filters, families will be able to quickly and conveniently filter and safely store clean drinking water at home, greatly improving their health. People will no longer need to collect water from the mountains, saving them many hours each week.

Who are we working with:

The Nazava water filters will reach families in Bobonaro, where almost half the population lack access to safe drinking water.

Distribution:

Our local partner, HADEER, previously received Nazava water filter samples from Kopernik and have already introduced them to the community with a promising response. HADEER anticipate that 1,000 water filters will be required to meet demand in Bobonaro and intend to continue with a second phase of the project after the first 500 water filters are sold. Families will be offered an instalment plan to make the technology affordable to more people. HADEER will repay 70 percent of the money collected from water filter sales to Kopernik, to be reinvested in the second phase of the project. The other 30 percent will go towards local distribution and promotion costs.

Project timeframe:
Six months
Location :
Reaching 2500 people
Local Partner Contribution:

HADEER will contribute their own funds to cover the upfront awareness-raising and domestic transportation costs.
